Producer: Saint-Michel Ballet Theatre of St. Petersburg
Music: P.I. Tchaikovsky
Choreography: Mikhail Venshchikov
The performance "Sleeping Beauty" is the pinnacle of classical ballet in the 19th century.
It was created in 1890 for the troupe of the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre with the participation of
two geniuses - composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky and choreographer Marius Petipa. Grandiose ensemble numbers, mime scenes, virtuoso duets and variations reflect in the performance the diversity of choreographic forms accumulated in classical ballet since its inception.
The libretto of the performance, based on the fairy tale by Charles Perrault, illustrates the story of Princess Aurora, who is awakened from a hundred-year sleep by the kiss of a handsome prince. Light-winged fairies and the sinister fairy Carabosse, with her demonic retinue, express in the performance the dialectic of existence, offering the main characters to make a difficult choice between good and evil.
Prince Desire personifies the image of the Sun King - Louis XIV, the absolute monarch and the perfect man. In the finale of the performance, when the action moves to the palace, the audience is presented with images of Versailles and the magnificent ceremony associated with it. The place of the courtiers in the beautiful interiors is taken by the heroes of fairy tales - the Blue Bird, Puss in Boots and the White Cat, Little Red Riding Hood and the Gray Wolf, Cinderella and Prince Fortune, who dance at the wedding celebration in honor of Desiree and Aurora.
In Mikhail Venshchikov's production, "Sleeping Beauty" (2019) retains all the most
famous fragments of the original Mariinsky Theater performance. At the same time,
the action becomes more dynamic, and the main characters' parts more virtuoso.
The characters of the performance, who were previously exclusively mimic - the fairy Carabosse,
the Princes - contenders for Aurora's hand, Catalabutte, etc. - acquire detailed
dance characteristics. The production design (art director V. Okunev, T. Koroleva, V. Zlotnikova) deserves special attention. It is based on a combination of traditional scenery and animated projection, which organically complements the reality of the stage action.
The ballet "Sleeping Beauty" is equally attractive to viewers of different generations.
The younger viewer will be interested in recognizing the fairy-tale characters they know in the play and following the collisions of the fascinating plot. The use of video projection
creates an organic visual environment for children, which does not let them get bored during the performance. Adult viewers will be able to enjoy the impeccable beauty of classical choreography,
luxurious stage costumes and, of course, Tchaikovsky's music, emotionally
saturated and harmonically impeccable.
